Gene G. Schoonveld is a professional wildlife biologist with 35 years of experience in the field. He received his BS BA degrees from the University of Denver and his MS degree from Colorado State University. His research at CSU centered on wildlife nutrition and the inability of deer to digest fibrous diets fed during supplemental feeding operations. He subsequently was employed by the Colorado Division of Wildlife as a research and senior biologist and retired after spending 32 years with the agency. During his career he was directly responsible for the reintroduction of moose into the State, investigated nutrition of bighorn sheep and the relationship of disease factors to lamb mortality, and the initial investigations into chronic wasting disease affecting both deer and elk. He has published much of his work which has been extensively referenced. He remains active in the in the wildlife profession doing some consulting and volunteer work.

Previous to his career in the wildlife field he was a flight deck officer aboard the USS Yorktown during the Vietnam era, and worked his way through school as a licensed aircraft mechanic for both United and Frontier Airlines

Gene has been active with USSA and has taken ailing and/or disabled young people on trips in Colorado, Alaska and Oklahoma. He is currently arranging hunting trips in Colorado for injured and/or disabled veterans coming home from Afghanistan or Iraq.

He currently resides in Fort Collins, Colorado, has three adult children and three grandchildren. In his spare time he looks after his grandkids, restores classic autos, raises flowers in a huge garden, and takes his two Brittany's pheasant and quail hunting. He also enjoys fishing off the west coast of Vancouver Island and going after bill fish in the Sea of Cortez.
